HAIRl | My natural hair

Natural hair, Afro hair, hair care

I'm so annoyed I always say "Yeahh, I'll take pictures of everything" but I really haven't, so no before and afters here. But I'll just start from the beginning;

The last time I relaxed my hair: May 2012 - I didn't really know it would be the last time but I started to hate my relaxed hair and just subconsciously decided I'd go back to natural, I had no idea it was a thing but I just knew I wanted to stop relaxing it.
I transitioned until: August 2013 then cut all the relaxed bits off.
The first time I wore my hair out as fully natural: April 2014 this was when I discovered the whole natural hair community and I was OBSESSED, I would watch tons of youtube videos on products, how to care for, what not to do & other journeys, I wore my hair natural until about the end of July 2014, then I braided my hair and 2 weeks after I shaved the sides.

I shaved it because I was getting really bored of everything and I was honestly running out of styles as I'd already changed my hair a gabillion times. I regularly shaved it until November 2014 and I was unsure whether I wanted to continue shaving or growing it out, so I grew it out until February 15th 2015 and I decided I wanted to shave it again as it adds to my looks and I can switch it up as well as the fact it doesn't really take away from my hair.

So this is basically what my hair looks like stretched out, my hair type is I dunno the real term (4x 3z lalalaa I don't know) but it's very soft.

  Shrinkage when dry & stretched

 shrinkage when wet

 shrinkage when wet

curl pattern when wet and when dry and unstretched.

I never check hair length so I have no idea, I also don't straighten my hair, I have before but I just feel bad as I feel like it's killing my hair lol so I stopped. I do have heat damage where I do my middle parting as I straighten this very often when I wear extensions, but it is a really small amount so I don't really mind. I do not blow dry my hair whatsoever because I hate how dry it makes my hair sdkfbdshkfbu (makes me cringe) and I try my best to use natural pure products but obviously Conditioner, leave in conditioner and oil moisturisers have chemicals. As for shampoos I don't mind it containing chemicals as sometimes I don't mind something harsh to completely get rid of product build up however if you guys know any great natural products to use as alternatives then pleaseee let me know!

How is your natural hair journey going?

All things natural | The Ultimate moisture mask

So I said I wanted to start a segment on my natural hair & this is it, however I don't see my natural hair often enough so I think I wanted to just make a natural place which included DIY face masks, green juices etc, not sure how I'm going to go about it yet but nevertheless this post is focused on my natural hair & a treatment mask I use and basically it's just to deep condition my hair after it has been in protective styling for a few weeks.

The ultimate moisture mask made with eggs, olive oil, milk & a dash of tresemme moisture rich conditioner.

What you will need:
2 whole eggs (you can use the yolk or white but I used both as they are both beneficial)
Dash of olive oil (by dash I mean like 1/4 of a cup but it is up to you - but not too much)
Dash of milk (just create a small puddle)
4 squeezes of conditioner (by squeezes I literally squeezed bottle 4 times)

How?
Section newly washed hair into a sensible amount to be able to apply it in every part of your hair from roots to ends and don't throw any away, if you have extra just pour it into your hair!
Cover with a plastic bag for deep conditioning then a towel so that it stops everything running down your face.
Leave for 20 minutes.
Rinse thoroughly NOT WITH HOT WATER OR ELSE YOU WILL HAVE POACHED EGGS IN YOUR HAIR WHICH YOU WILL HAVE TO SPEND AGES REMOVING! (I didn't listen to this)
Rinse with conditioner more than once to get the eggy smell out

I then t-shirt dried my hair so it's not soaking wet (I don't use blow dryers) while my hair was damp I sectioned it and detangled as well as doing the LOC method LOC Method explained (click here) using castor oil for my scalp, olive oil for my ends, keracare leave in conditioner and olive oil daily cream moisturiser; I then tied hair up in a silk wrap and went to sleep!

The sciency stuff
Why eggs?
Eggs are rich in protein. Protein helps to make the hair follicle stronger and stronger strands of hair are less likely to break. Therefore, fewer split ends. Applying raw eggs to hair also makes it smooth meaning easier to brush or comb and less likely to become tangled or knotted. Hair is also made thicker from the protein in raw eggs. This is beneficial if you have limp, lifeless hair or if your hair is thinning. Eggs act like a conditioner and moisturize dry hair. Eggs also make dull hair shine because unlike shampoo, eggs maintain the hair’s natural oils, which shampoo strips away.

Why olive oil?
Prevent DTH Hormones Production. A hormone called DTH is the culprit in many cases of hair loss, as it causes the hair follicle shaft to narrow. Olive oil actually stops this from happening, which means you can hold onto your hair for longer.
Promote Scalp Health. Olive oil is loaded with antioxidants, which can keep the skin of your scalp in better shape. It can even reduce the damage done by hair care products or overuse of styling products.
Naturally Condition the Hair. Olive oil can make your hair shiny and soft. That's why it has been used for centuries as a natural hair conditioner.
Fight off Fungi and Bacteria. Dandruff, head lice and other adverse conditions can contribute to hair loss. Fortunately, olive oil fights off all of these things, helping keep your hair healthier.
Improve Blood Circulation. Olive oil massages can improve the blood circulation in your scalp. This increased blood flow can stimulate the follicles, which then produce thicker strands.

Why milk?
  • Adds body to hair, when used in conjunction with egg and honey gives hair a very intense protein treatment.
  • Adds moisture to hair, its best to use it with carrier oils, like coconut and almond oil for a good deep conditioning treatment.
  • Makes hair resilient, hair soaked in milk can add to the tensile strength of the hair.
  • Gives hair incredible shine and gloss. Especially useful if added to your regular moisturizing conditioning treatment.
  • Milk can be added to hair butters for a creamy, less dense conditioner. This works very well for thick, dry hair.

Why conditioner?
This is optional but I used it to give the mask a creamier consistency as its easier to apply to hair & it smells pretty, however this does take away from the naturalness.
